Guatemalan Maya Cortes
The Maya woman's skirt (refrajo) is
commonly referred to as a 'corte'. Corte comes from the verb cortar,
meaning 'to cut'. The fabric is a cut (or length) of cloth which is
typically handwoven on a foot powered treadle loom. Though the styles
vary, the most common are floor length and tube shaped, worn tightly
wrapped around the hips and secured at the waist with a sash. Because
most cortes are simply large, flat pieces of fabric, they are commonly
used for many different projects such as clothing, curtains, upholstery,
etc. Click here to shop cortes by village.
